PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a metal oxide catalyst that enables production of acrylic acid, acrylonitrile and the like in a high yield and in a single step by catalytic oxidation reaction of propane.
SOLUTION : When a metal oxide catalyst represented by the following compositional formula is produced, Te4+ compound or Te6+ compound is reduced in the presence of a reducer and water or an organic solvent to give a reduced product containing metal tellurium, subsequently unreacted reducer is removed from the reduced product, and then the reduced product from which the unreacted reducer has been removed and contains metal tellurium is reacted in the presence of Mo, V, and A elements and water, followed by drying and burning, where compositional formula is MoViTejAkOy (wherein, A is at least one type of element selected from Nb, Ta, W, Ti, Zr, Re, Fe, Ni, Co, Sn, Tl, Cu, a rare earth element, and an alkaline metal element. The i and j are respectively 0.01 to 1.5, and j/i=0.3 to 1.0, k is 0.001 to 3.0, and y is a number determined depending on oxidation status of other elements).
