Conventional thermoelectric materials have not achieved sufficient thermoelectric conversion performance and have not realized stable performance in oxidizing atmospheres and in the air. To solve such problems, a thermoelectric material is disclosed which is composed of a composite oxide which mainly contains a vanadium oxide and is represented by the general formula : AxVOx+1.5+d. In the formula, A represents at least one element selected from alkali elements, alkaline earth elements and rare earth elements; x is a value not less than 0.2 but not more than 2; and d represents a variable ratio of oxygen within the range from -1 to 1.
