PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a polymer with a high molecular weight and a small molecular weight distribution (weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight) in a high yield without gelling it through anionic polymerization, wherein an unreacted radically polymerizable reactive group remains within the polymer molecule.
SOLUTION : A polymerizable monomer is anionically polymerized using a metal complex catalyst having a rare-earth metal at its active center, particularly a metal complex compound of the formula : (Cp1)(Cp2)Mr-(R)p(L)q (wherein Cp1 and Cp2 are each an (un)substituted cyclopentadienyl and may be bond to each other either directly or via a linking group; Mr is a rare-earth metal atom; (r) is the valence number of Mr and is 2-4; R is hydrogen atom or a 1-3C linear alkyl group; and L is a solvent having a coordinating property). The polymerizable monomer essentially comprises a monomer having an anionically polymerizable reactive group and at least one substantially radically polymerizable reactive group within the molecule.
