To provide a method for producing a rare earth permanent magnet material as an R-Fe-B based sintered magnet (R is two or more kinds selected from rare earth elements including Sc and Y) having high performance, and in which the amount of Tb or Dy to be used is reduced. Regarding the method for producing a rare earth permanent magnet material, a treatment where, to a sintered magnet having an R1aTbAcMd composition [R1 is rare earth elements including Sc and Y; T is Fe and/or Co; A is B (boron) and/or C (carbon); M is one or more kinds selected from Al, Cu, Zn, In, Si, P, S, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Ga, Ge, Zr, Nb, Mo, Pd, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb, Hf, Ta and W; and a to d are the atomic% of the alloy, and 10 ≤ a ≤ 15, 3 ≤ c ≤ 15, and 0.01≤ d ≤ 11 are satisfied, and the balance is b], in a state where a powder comprising the oxide of R2, the fluoride of R3, and the oxyfluoride of R4(R2, R3 and R4 are rare earth elements including Sc and Y), and having a mean grain diameter of ≤ 100 μm is made present on the surface of the sintered magnet body, the magnet body and the powder are heat-treated at a temperature equal to or below the sintering temperature of the magnet body, thus the R2, R3 and R4 comprised in the powder are absorbed into the magnet body is repeated for two or more times.
