Tanning apparatus 1 in the form of a vertical or upright, generally tubular unit defining an inner chamber 2 has a generally elliptical outer casing 3 in which is mounted a hinged door 4 allowing easy walk-in access to the chamber. An array of UV tanning bulbs or lamps 5 are mounted within the outer casing 3 and door, generally following the inner contour of the casing 3 except in two opposed central regions 6, 7 of the casing and door 4 respectively. Opposed regions 6, 7 are convex lamp panels and form re-entrant or curved inward portions of the otherwise elliptical chamber 2, with the tanning bulbs 5 following the convex curvature of said regions. Thus the chamber is formed as a double lobe shape, to direct radiation to the inside surfaces of the legs and achieve an even tan. There may also be an upper body irradiating portion (104, see figure 5) and a raised floor 10. The bulbs may number 30-50.
