A material for making a ceramic filter element that is decomposable when buried in the earth and re-washable with brush means of hard hairs is composed of diatomaceous earth, Igloss (ignition loss material), carboxymethyl cellulose and water. Igloss may be ground into particles of predetermined diameter subject to the caliber of the pores of the ceramic filter element to be made. The material comprises 37-39 wt% diatomaceous earth, 6-8 wt% Igloss, 6-8 wt% CMC and 47-49 wt% water.
